David Shields is an Associate Professor and formerly chair (2012–2021) of the Department of Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is engaged in the physical and historical research of nineteenth century typography and was the Design Custodian of the Rob Roy Kelly American Wood Type Collection between 2004–2012.
